Mühlendorf Gschnitz & Sandes waterfall

Important information: At the end of June 2025, the mill village of Gschnitz was almost completely destroyed by several mudslides. Only the small St. Joseph's Chapel survived the catastrophe (damaged).

The operators of the mill village have publicly stated that a complete reconstruction in the original style at the original location is not possible. According to an expert report, the area on the Sandesbach stream can no longer be used for complex purposes due to current safety standards. (Source: Kronen Zeitung).

However, a "small new beginning" is planned around the preserved chapel. A much smaller version of the mill village is planned, which will serve as a place of remembrance and meeting for the people of the region. (Source: My district)

From here on, the original article about the mill village follows. We haven't removed it because it serves as a reminder.

The mill village of Gschnitz is a museum village in Tyrol with a focus on water mills. It is located at around 1300 meters above sea level in the Gschnitztal.

Mühlendorf Gschnitz

In the midst of a breathtaking landscape, visitors can see the water-powered mills, a grain mill and a forge, among others. The mill village is particularly popular with children as it offers an imaginative insight into the technology of times gone by.

Directly above the mill village is the impressive Sandes waterfall, which can be crossed over a high bridge during a tour of the mill village. Inhaling the aerosols from the Sandes waterfall is said to strengthen the immune system. From the bridge you have an impressive view over the mill village and the valley.

If you don't want to go up to the bridge, you can watch the waterfall from the viewing platforms in the mill village and breathe in the healthy air in peace. The view of the waterfall from the platform alone is worth a visit.
